SADDEST DAY OF 1970
October 25, 1970
Old Sacramento Fairgrounds
1 Mile Dirt Track
3rd Annual U.S. Open Championship For Sprint Cars and Super Modifieds. Sanctioned by C.R.A. Promoted by J.C. Agajanian.
Three drivers would loose their lives on this day. In the semi-final Ernie Purssell, "The Bearded Wonder" from Nevada City driving the Jack McCabe super modified slammed the front straight crash wall just before the first turn. His car began flipping and was hit broadside causing his roll cage to collapse. At the same time Walt Reiff, who had qualified 21st for the feature event in the Hansen Automotive Off, was watching the race from the infield. Upon seeing the accident Reiff rushed to the edge of the track to warn on comming drivers. Reiff was struck by a car driven by Paul Turner. Both Purssell and Reiff were declared dead at the hospital. Jimmy Gordon had just won the West Capital Raceway super modified championship just a few weeks earlier. He was driving the Don Edmunds Research Chevy #96. It was just his second career start in a sprint car. One week earlier Gordon had placed second in his first career start in Phoenix. On lap 35 of the 100-mile event, Gordon tangled with another car entering turn 3. Gordon's car cartwheeled and was struck by the car driven ny Ron Rea. The Impact ripped the fuel tank out of the car causing an inferno. Gordon's roll cage also collapsed. The race was stopped and Jerry Blundy declared as the winner. Gordon died later at the hospital. There would never be another race run at the old Sacramento Fairgrounds track.
